Research synopsis:

During influenza A virus infection, much of the lung pathology and consequent morbidity and mortality is caused by the host immune response to infection, rather than viral replication. Thus, how influenza A virus induces and modulates host responses is a key determinant of the outcome of infection. Exciting studies have showed that a newly discovered influenza ribonuclease and immune modulator, PA-X, exerts a protective effect on its host, reducing inflammatory responses and thus immunopathology. My research will focus on dissecting the interaction between PA-X and its host co-factors to determine how this protein accesses its target mRNAs to exert its protective effects.
