Research synopsis:

While small molecule inhibitors have made great strides for the field of molecular medicine by fitting into active sites or small pockets in the proteins they target, there are many protein-protein interactions that have long since been considered undruggable because too much surface area is involved in the interaction between them. The Kritzer lab seeks to utilize cyclic peptides to do just this and design very specific inhibitors that target the required hotspots that make these interactions possible. These peptide inhibitors may be the key to targeting protein interactions relevant to areas of cancer cell signaling, viral entry into host cells, and more.
