The P2P Advantage

working in the lab

The P2P experience can change your perspective about science and research.

Outcomes

  • 100% of the 2023 P2P cohort obtained paid summer student research experiences at places like Tufts, Harvard, UMass Medical School and U Mass Boston
  • 25% of our P2P alumni participated in the NIH-funded BDBS summer program at Tufts.
  • One former student is currently member of our NIH PREP (post-bac) program.

What our former trainees say about P2P

Rosita Ramirez, P2P 2023

If it hadn’t been for the P2P program, I wouldn't have had any knowledge of summer programs and wouldn't be where I am now. I really grew so much personally, professionally and academically, and it also provided me with life-long friends!

Rosita also participated in the Harvard/MIT Equitable Access to Research (HEART) MD/PhD Summer Program in 2023.

Najah Walton (P2P 2017)

The Pathways to PhD Program allowed me to explore the diverse landscape of research being performed at Tufts while also gaining hands on experience with research techniques that I had not been exposed to before. Each week was an exciting new challenge to learn cutting edge science, perform techniques in varying scientific disciplines, and practice interpreting and presenting research findings. My time in P2P connected me with mentors that were instrumental in my decision to pursue graduate school at Tufts.

Najah graduated with her PhD in Neuroscience from GSBS. While in training here, she was a recipient of the prestigious Ford Foundation Fellowship.

Dora Kadish (P2P 2017)

The P2P program gave me the push I needed to pursue a PhD of my own.  Before that, the various paths following post-graduate life held closer resemblance to a far-fetched dream rather than a tangible idea.  I knew that I did not want to go to medical school, and I would not reach my full potential with only a Master's.  The P2P program allowed me to know exactly what it meant to get a PhD in the sciences, thus allowing me to feel comfortable and confident in pursuing that degree.

Brian Hall (P2P 2018)

For me, the P2P program did all that it was advertised to do and more. Not only did I get a realistic hands on experience of the day to day life of a PhD student, which helped guide me on what the next steps of my life would be, but it also presented a perfect opportunity to network and practice marketable skills of my resume such as presenting data, public speaking, and research in biohazard lab. I would highly recommend this program.

Luana Melo (P2P 2018)

Luana was featured in a GSBS Insight article where she discussed her experiences in P2P. As Luana said in the article "The research we did was exciting; some focused-on microbiology, some on immunology, and some on neuroscience. ...That ability to reflect and adapt the experimental design, to think critically about future improvements, and what factors are to be excluded are just some of the valuable skills I learned in the program."

Shauna Kelly (2020)

The Pathway to PhD program was one of the highlights of my college career; it provided a clear and realistic picture of what going for a PhD is like. Not only was the research we were doing interesting, but we got the chance to work with a few different model organisms like C. elegans, E. coli, and C. difficile. The graduate students were very welcoming and eager to share their own experiences of what grad school is like both in and out of lab. Lastly, being able to present our findings to a small panel was GREAT practice. I also wound up making friends with my fellow P2P participants and now we all work in the same lab!

Shauna is now a PhD candidate at UMass Boston in the McCusker Lab.

Consider P2P and apply for the coming year.
